South Sound Connection (SSC) LIVE - Episode 009

SSC LIVE is brought to you by The DYOJO Podcast (thedyojo.com) and All American Restoration Services (Tacoma, WA - #safety.com).

Tuesday, January 19, 2021 9am PST - LIVE www.youtube.com/thedyojo

Guest 1

Jack (John) Cameron - Tacoma Stories (Tacoma, WA)

Jack has spent years chronicling the homicides that occur in Tacoma. He also write about local businesses and books that take place in and around Tacoma. "Corruption and crime have been a part of Tacoma since its inception. There have been times when these dark elements seem to have consumed the city, but each time, Tacoma manages to come out of it and revitalize itself."

tacomastories.com

Jack was interviewed by Tacoma Daily Index and had this to say about his work, "I'm interested in what makes people desperate and what causes these violent actions," says Tacoma resident Jack Cameron who writes about homicide victims online. "More importantly, and specifically when it comes to these homicide victims, these are people who didn't want to go. It's different than a suicide. It's different than somebody dying of old age or something. Somebody else took these people out, and they didn't want to go. I think their story deserves to be told as to who they were and what happened."

Unfortunately the trend for local homicides is going up, Jack shares that in 2020 there were 30-32 (he is having trouble verifying those additional two), which is more than 2016 and 2017 combined. Many of the families that he writes about have set up GoFundMe accounts to help with burial fees, he keeps these as up to date as possible on his Tacoma Stories Facebook page.

On the lighter side we discuss his book, Ruin Your Life, "A self help book for hooligans."

South Sound Connection (SSC) LIVE - Episode 008 - Part B

SSC LIVE is brought to you by The DYOJO Podcast (thedyojo.com) and All American Restoration Services (Tacoma, WA - allamericanres.com).

Guest 2

Korbett Mosesly - Creator of Success Factors and Founder of Mosesly Consulting (Tacoma, WA)

Korbett was our inaugural guest and returns to tell us how his game Success Factors is doing now that copies are being distributed. We will also discuss what 2021 looks like for Tacoma Publishing.

tacomapublishing.com

Korbett shares his thoughts on:
  • Developing and distributing his game, Success Factors, the 1st round sold out and they are working on assembling the back orders for the 2nd round.
  • Financial literacy and family discussion is built into the operation of the game. Each of the components can lead to side games to discuss career opportunities and life skills with members of your family in all age categories.
  • The broader discussion of the tax benefits of small and family owned businesses, which Korbett is learning in real time as the game and his publishing company grow.

You can tell Success Factors was designed by a father who wants to pass his knowledge and curiosity on to his sons as it does a wonderful job of drawing out discussions related to life, career, goals, and financial literacy:
  • What makes for a good career?
  • What do various professions make in your area (QR code enabled game cards for local statistics)
  • What will your budget look like if you want to have money to save, invest, and contribute to local causes that matter to you?
  • What are some of the "Curve Balls" that life will throw at you? * Question cards are composed to inspire discussions such as - what is a good credit score, what affects your credit score, what are your goals for this year, etc.

Be Intentional: Culture Authors

Be Intentional Culture, Book #2 from The DYOJO
The DYOJO publication announces book number two, Be Intentional: Culture, which is now available from Amazon via Kindle and paperback. This is a collaborative work with authors who are professionals in various industries.

The reader knows a bad culture when we they it, yet it may not always lend itself to clear definitions. One common factor in the mindset and habits that lead to enhancing a strong and productive culture are these truths:

  • Taking care of your culture is critical to taking care of your people.
  • Taking care of your people is essential to taking care of your customers.
  • Taking care of your customers is the foundation of a sustainable business.

Therefore, developing, adapting, and caring for your culture is vital to your vitality as an organization. Your input of time, effort, and resources towards developing an intentional culture is directly linked to achieving optimal business outputs. Be Intentional: Culture digs into this subject matter, asking the question: What are some of the small things that have helped to enhance, or undermine, culture in the experiences of our talented group of authors?

Draeger, Luke
Outside Sales, Aramsco

Outside sales representative for the largest supplier to the abatement and mitigation industries. Specifically, I have extensive knowledge of equipment and supplies pertaining to the disaster restoration field, ensuring I bring a high level of service to Aramsco's valued customers.

A·nom·a·ly: "Something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected."
I think this word - "anomaly" - describes me well. An English major with a heart for higher education, I found myself through a series of coincidences in the field of disaster recovery.

For eight years, I supervised and performed mitigation services in homes and businesses, encountering losses large and small. After nearly a decade of 2am phone calls, dealing with insurance claims, consoling homeowners, and swimming in lots and lots of raw sewage, I found I was ready for another challenge.

Through yet another coincidence, I found myself interviewing for the manager job at Interlink Supply of Seattle. The position proved to be one of the most challenging and rewarding of my professional life.

Following the acquisition of Bridgewater (Interink's parent co.) by Aramsco, I am taking on a new challenge as restoration sales manager for the Seattle region.

My approach to sales is unique. We hear all the time that sales is all about relationships, which is certainly true, and I greatly enjoy the relationships I'm able to cultivate each day, but I also think sales is about caring. I think sales is a lot about listening and responding with the heart of a teacher.

My truest passion is for writing. I maintain a blog at legionwriter.com, where I attempt to publish musings at least a few times a month. I also enjoy teaching others to write. I volunteer as a tutor through the King County Libraries.
Some day, that novel I've been pecking away at for six years will see the light. Some day.

Pairing an innovator and an integrator

1/14/2021

Kevin Hussey, CEO & President of United Fire and Water Damage (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), joins The DYOJO Podcast to discuss his entrepreneurial journey. Kevin started his adventure in the skilled trades when he opened a carpet cleaning business in Colorado. Like many in the industry, that venture evolved into adding services for water damage mitigation and property restoration.

Many growth minded professionals think that there is money to be made in water and fire damage restoration. They are right, but there are also many tough lessons that must be learned if you are going to be successful in building a company that will be profitable and sustainable. Kevin moved his operation to Louisiana following opportunities that presented themselves in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

As Mr. Hussey made roots, he continued to evolve as a person in a position of leadership and recognized his need to add an integrator. In his book Traction, author Gino Wickman talks about the importance of pairing an innovator with an integrator, "
The Visionary/Integrator relationship is a two-piece puzzle. Even the most inspiring Visionaries cannot do it all, and the ideal Integrator will fill the void, seal the gap, and complete the winning formula." Kevin shares many of his thoughts in this hiring process, joining a national network, as well as the local marketing efforts that have helped them remain independent from the preferred vendor programs common in insurance claims repairs.

Discussion Topics from TDP 44:
  • His journey from carpet cleaning in Colorado to helping Blockbuster video recover from Hurricane Katrina
  • Meeting a “nice Southern girl” and making roots in Lousiana
  • Joining the DKI network * The challenges and advantages of hiring an “integrator” when you are an “innovator” (terminology from Gino Wickman’s book Traction: Get A Grip On Your Business)
  • The alternatives to being a “program” or “preferred” vendor for insurance companies
  • Creative ideas for generating work as an “independent” contractor working with plumbers, realtors, adjusters and more.
  • The good idea that quickly became a bad one - starting your own plumbing company as a restoration contractor
  • Using Docusketch to maximize your efficiency in estimating insurance claims

TDP 44 Breaks and Announcements:
  • We share our first reading list for 2021
  • This must be the year of the podcast, we share several of the industry podcasts that have been created in 2020 in the opening introduction
  • If you didn’t catch it the first time, Gerrett Stier put an amazing ad together for GMS Distribution that is hilarious and informative, this is a master-class in modern advertising
  • The Intentional Restorer column in Restoration and Remediation (R&R) Magazine for January will feature a discussion of Dr. Leo Marvin’s groundbreaking book, Baby Steps, and the parallels to our professional growth in 2021
